DevOps Lead

Fluence is the first decentralized “Cloudless” computing platform, providing an open alternative to the giant internet cloud monopolies. Fluence is up to 80% cheaper than cloud providers and is both resilient and verifiable. Fluence assembles excess compute capacity from top tier data centers around the world into a global, always-on DePIN network that is suitable for running a wide range of applications. The platform is open, allowing users to change providers easily, ensuring that prices stay low and service levels are high.

Who We’re Looking For:

You’re a systems thinker who understands how bits translate into bandwidth, and how vendor relationships can impact customer experience. You’re not afraid to dive deep into hardware specs or rewrite a cluster layout if that’s what it takes. You enjoy mentoring others, driving architectural change, and speaking both “DevOps” and “vendor.”

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Strategy:
    • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of senior DevOps engineers.
    • Drive architectural decisions, ensuring they’re grounded in both strategic vision and hands-on feasibility.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for infrastructure-related vendor communication, from troubleshooting to collaborative solution design.
  • Infrastructure and Network Design:
    • Overhaul our current network architecture to support segmentation (e.g., private/public subnets, NAT gateways, bandwidth controls) inspired by AWS, likely implemented with KubeOVN.
    • Re-architect our cluster layout: transition from a one-cluster-per-provider-server approach to a more scalable multi-node setup.
    • Ensure our infrastructure supports varied customer needs—from personal VPS to high-performance VM setups.
  • Hardware and Performance:
    • Bring expertise in low-level system performance: CPU architecture, GPU computing, and general hardware optimization.
    • Collaborate with hardware vendors to ensure predictable performance and clear understanding of the compute resources we resell.
  • Observability and Security:
    • Implement observability solutions (e.g., Grafana stack) for comprehensive monitoring and alerting.
    • Define Kubernetes network policies and secrets management systems to ensure secure multi-tenant operations.

Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    • 5+ years in DevOps, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
    • Proven track record in Kubernetes environments, including KubeVirt and advanced networking tools (KubeOVN, Cilium).
    • Strong background in cloud-native and hybrid infrastructure design (AWS, GCP, Azure).
    • Experience with hardware-level performance tuning and troubleshooting.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Expert-level understanding of computer networking and Kubernetes-based network solutions.
    • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
    • Experience with observability and security tools in cloud environments.
    • Ability to make architecture-level decisions and defend them with technical rationale.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Confident leadership and team mentorship.
    • Comfortable making high-impact decisions and taking ownership.
    • Strong communication and negotiation skills for working with external vendors.
    • Language: English level C1+/ Russian fluent

What You’ll Tackle First:

  • Redesign our Kubernetes network layout with public/private subnet segregation, bandwidth controls, and internet gateway support.
  • Lead the transition to a more scalable cluster architecture.
  • Build strong relationships with hardware providers and become the internal go-to person for hardware insights

Future Challenges:

  • Ensure our infrastructure is flexible enough to support a range of customer needs, from enterprise blockchain setups to GPU-powered ML workloads.
  • Help the company evolve its marketplace offering through better observability, transparency, and performance guarantees.
